Graduate Teaching Assistant Orientation: Introduction to Effective Teaching
The Graduate Teaching Assistant Orientation is organized every year with the goal of providing you with valuable information and resources to help you succeed as a TA at WVU. It provides fundamentals of effective teaching and introduces WVU teaching-related policies.
- Please Note: **If you will not be teaching during fall 2023 or spring 2024, you should wait and attend the year that you teach. The information in this orientation is more relevant and useful when you have it closer to the time that you will be teaching.**
This orientation consists of two parts. Details appear below. You need to complete both parts.
Part 1. Online Modules
These modules must be completed by August 7, 2023. They are available on eCampus. Information on how to access them is found here .
These modules provide essential information and resources that will help you to navigate the following:
Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
As an instructor, you are responsible for maintaining confidentiality of students’ personal information, including their grades and performance in the course. This module will help you anticipate common FERPA issues that instructors face and help you avoid FERPA violations.
Diversity and Accessibility
When you teach, you will have diverse learners. This module shares ideas on how to reach all learners in your classroom and assist students with special needs through accommodations.
Academic Integrity and Dishonesty
In this module, you will explore examples of academic dishonesty and gain information to help prevent it. You will learn how to promote academic integrity among your students and help them meet WVU academic standards and guidelines. In addition, the module covers Title IX training required for all employees, including Graduate Teaching Assistants. Title IX creates equity for faculty, staff, and students and covers the following: sexual violence, sex or gender-based discrimination, stalking, relationship violence, bullying, and sexual misconduct.
Integrating School and Life
This module will help you identify WVU resources that can help you and your students balance school and life.
Part 2. Mentoring and Practice
These sessions focus on an introduction to effective teaching and resources to support you as an instructor. You will learn about the following:
- classroom management
- active learning and motivating students
- practice teaching in a supportive environment

Date and Time
Each day covers different content, so you are encouraged to attend both days.
- Thursday, August 10, 1:00 - 3:30 pm, on Zoom
- Friday, August 11, In Person - Ming Hsieh Hall G20. You will be assigned to either the morning group (9:00 - 11:30 am) or the afternoon group (1:00 - 3:30)
