Campus Resources for Student Support Services

We believe student success incorporates the whole person and that student progress has a much to do with socioemotional, physical, and financial factors as it does with intellectual skills. And students want faculty to support them in maintaining a healthy balance between academic effort and other areas of life. Referring students to campus resources can help overcome barriers to student success and wellbeing.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Supporting students mental and emotional health is critical for student success since 25% or more of adults will experience a mental health challenge. WVU resources for students mental and emotional health are below, and resources for students and faculty are shared on the TLC website as well.

The WVU CARE Team is a multidisciplinary group that addresses and helps at-risk students obtain the needed supports and assistance to be successful at WVU. This resource makes it easy for students, staff, and faculty to better assist students who are at-risk. To learn more or complete an online referral to the CARE Team, visit the CARE Team website.

The Carruth Center offers counseling and psychological services including a crisis clinic, group counseling (including groups specific to LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and International Students), short term counseling, and referrals. Their satellite office at the health sciences, BeWell, offers behavioral wellness services and many of the same services for students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) at the health sciences. New for students is Talkspace, an online therapy service that connects students to a licensed therapist via private messaging and live video - anytime, anywhere.

Physical Wellbeing

There is a strong relationship between physical health and academic performance with those in good health exhibiting lower risk for academic-related problems. To support physical health, WVU offers a variety of resources across campus.

Student Health is located in the health and education building across from the Student Recreation Center. It provides top quality healthcare for students throughout their time at WVU. They offer acute and primary care including wellness visits, vaccinations, telemedicine and more. Located in the same building, WellWVU fosters the complete wellbeing of students through promotion and education. Grounded in prevention research, WellWVU is committed to best practices in health education and evaluation. They offer programming on alcohol and drugs, sexual harassment, stress management, and have mental health training resources.

Physical activity is improves memory, focus, sleep, and mood. Incorporating activity can help students achieve overall wellbeing and academic success. To promote physical activity, the Student Recreation Center offers exceptional recreation, wellness, and education opportunities for WVU students. Their commitment to health living serves students physical wellbeing by creating and promoting opportunities to be active, including group fitness, club and intramural sports, rock climbing, and aquatics. Located within the SRC, AdventureWV offers adventure education programming for students of all levels which supports adjustment to college life, retention, and career success by assisting student development in self-knowledge, team work, and leadership skills.

Healthy nutritional intake also supports physical wellbeing and student success. Through WVU Dining Services students can meet one-on-one with a registered dietitian to help students achieve nutrition goals and address food allergy and intolerance concerns. Dining services also offers resources on making informed nutrition choices and tips for eating healthier when dining on campus. Speaking of food, research from WVU shows that up to one third of college students in Appalachia are food insecure and it’s hard to study when you’re hungry! The Rack is a WVU student food pantry that provides non-perishable and perishable food items to all WVU students who are in need of assistance. They aim to alleviate hunger for all WUV students and foster a healthy and inclusive community by providing access to food and programs.

Social Wellbeing

Social wellbeing focuses on building strong relationships, connections, and support systems with others, including peers and colleagues. The resources below are available to help students connect with campus life and promotes student success and engagement.

Student life supports WVU’s student-centered learning environment, allows students to fully develop, and, in partnership with university colleagues, offers the highest quality programs, services, and opportunities, based on a foundation of values and the Mountaineer Creed. Student life creates an extraordinary and transformative experience for every WVU student. Fraternities, the Center for Community Engagement, and more than 450 student organizations are part of student life.

The Center for Black Culture and Research provides educational, social, and cultural support for African and African American students, faculty, staff, and community members. Students are the greatest asset to the Center which is committed to doing everything possible to help them reach their full potential as members of our academic community.

The LGBTQ+ Center provides programming and resources for WVU students, faculty, staff, and community members. It offers inclusive programming and outreach initiatives for WVU and collaborates with and supports the university’s larger social justice efforts by providing inclusive, academic, and curricular development training on all WVU campuses, by advocating for members of our community, and by building coalitions. LGBTQ+ Center works throughout the state to improve understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues and also provides a warm, comfortable atmosphere for join in organizing, socializing, teaching, and learning.

Almost 5,000 WVU students are parents and student family resources supports student parents, including resources for child care assistance, the Mountaineer KidZone, and lactation rooms around campus.

Serenity Place is home to the WVU Collegiate Recovery Center. Through activities centered around health, wellness, adventure, community, service, and fun, the WVU CRP’s goal is to provide support and resources necessary for students to thrive in their recovery and develop purpose and meaning as the move forward in life. It’s available to those who are in, seeking, or supporting recovery.

Financial Wellbeing

College students struggling with financial insecurity may spend more time working and less time studying. Resources are available through Student Financial Services to assist including access to peer educators. This program provides students access to trained student staff who help guide them through complex financial decisions and answer questions about common financial concerns. Students may also benefit from legal advice from Student Legal Services is committed to protecting the legal rights and interests of the student body, including leases, contracts, insurance matters, landlord/tenant issue, employment grievances, and general civic matters.
